Dr. Jim Arnold
Dr. Jim Arnold has been practicing dentistry in Northwest Indiana since 1996 and has enjoyed giving back to the community where he grew up. Originally from Valparaiso, he is very happy to be raising his family in the same, wonderful town. He feels very fortunate to serve the people of Valparaiso, Chesterton, and all of Northwest Indiana with excellent, comprehensive dental care.
While he really enjoys enhancing smiles with cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, and Invisalign®, his real passion is helping people. Enabling people to smile beautifully, overcome dental anxiety, chew comfortably, enjoy excellent oral health, and maintain their teeth for a lifetime are the commitments he makes to patients every day.
He has built a team of like-minded dental professionals who are just as committed to excellence as he is. That is what really sets the Smiles by Arnold & Associates team apart – their single-minded determination to make every dental experience outstanding. Dr. Arnold and his team understand that many people have dental anxiety, so they do everything possible to alleviate fear and treat patients gently, expertly, and with compassion. They have completed courses in oral conscious sedation to ensure comfort and peace of mind.
Over the years, Dr. Arnold and his team have committed themselves to continuing dental education with the best experts in the field, so that they are always at the forefront of what is new in dentistry. He and his outstanding team have worked tirelessly to make Smiles by Arnold & Associates the best that it can be for its family of patients.
They have completed courses at several institutes around the country, such as the Kois Center in Seattle, the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, the Pacific Aesthetic Continuum in San Francisco, the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the Esthetic Epitome in Charlotte, the Hornbrook Group in Los Angeles and Houston, and the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Study in St. Petersburg.
Additionally, Dr. Arnold and the team have been trained in Invisalign orthodontic treatment, and they received advanced training in laser dentistry at the World Clinical Laser Institute. Their commitment to advanced education in dentistry is very unique and is far beyond the annual requirements to maintain licensure.
This is nothing new for Dr. Arnold, however. He has always worked hard to excel in everything he does. At Valparaiso high school, he graduated with a 4.1 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) while earning All-State and All-American honors in track and cross-country. He also helped lead his team to two undefeated seasons and two State Championships. He did all of this while participating in multiple extracurricular activities where he was President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Treasurer of the Foreign Exchange Club.
Dr. Arnold attended college at Indiana University on a full academic scholarship, and he was also a member of the varsity track and cross-country teams. He won several athletic and athletic awards at IU, and was nominated as a candidate for a Rhodes Scholarship.
At the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Dr. Arnold was elected class President four years in a row, was student body Vice President, and served as his fraternity’s President. Needless to say, he was extremely busy, but also found time to represent his school at national meetings. His academic prowess, clinical ability, and commitment to leadership earned Dr. Arnold the IDA Award for Leadership, and the ASDA Award of Excellence while in dental school.
Since his 1996 graduation, he has continued to take on additional responsibilities and has continued to be recognized for excellence in his field. He has served the dental community as an officer for the Porter County Dental Society, a Board Member for the Northwest Indiana Dental Society since 1999, and he served on the Peer Review Committee for seven years, with three years as its Chairman. Additionally, Dr. Arnold has been a member of the Indiana Dental Association’s Strategic Planning Committee and the IDA’s Council on the New Dentist.
In 2004, Dr. Arnold was selected to be a clinical instructor for the elite Hornbrook Group, teaching advanced cosmetic dental techniques to dentists around the country for four years. He achieved Fellowship status in the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics in 2003 and has served on ACE’s Advisory Board for seven years. Three of those years were spent as the Chairman of the Fellowship Committee.
In 2007 and 2008, Dr. Arnold traveled to India to help train over 1500 dentists in modern dental techniques, performing a probono full mouth rehabilitation for an Indian patient. He has also been a volunteer dentist at the Hilltop House free dental clinic in Valparaiso.
Dr. Arnold has been a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry since 2002, attending and participating in its national meetings. In 2009, the AACD awarded him the “Partner’s In Peace Award” for his work with victims of domestic abuse through the “Give Back a Smile” program. He was one of only six dentists out of several thousand members to earn this distinction. He also had an article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry detailing his handling of a complex full mouth rehab case he completed free of charge.
Several other dental publications have published articles written by Dr. Arnold, showing examples of his work. An article for the International Dental Tribune was also published in multiple languages for dentists around the world. He also wrote an “Ask the Dentist” column twice monthly for over three years for the Times Newspaper of Northwest Indiana.
Dr. Arnold has also been featured on many radio, television, and internet programs discussing cosmetic dentistry, communication in dentistry, building great dental teams, and finding balance in life. He feels that creating a healthy balance between one’s professional, personal, and family life is essential to finding happiness.
Marrying Sarah in 1998 was the key to beginning this journey toward fulfillment and life balance. Together, they founded Smiles by Arnold & Associates based on the principles of excellence, service, and integrity, and they found wonderful people with whom to share their vision. The Smiles by Arnold & Associates team is truly extraordinary, and they make receiving dental care and achieving excellent oral health a pleasure for their patients.
The Arnolds welcomed their first daughter, Julia, in 2001, and Sophia was born in 2002. Sons, Ethan and Matthew, joined their growing family in 2005 and 2006. All four kids are active and healthy, and keep the Arnolds quite busy with school, sports, and academic endeavors.
Jim and Sarah are both competitive triathletes. Sarah began training seriously in 2009 and inspired Jim to get involved in 2010. After beginning to swim and cycle for the first time, he fared quite well in his first season. Sarah finished 12th at the Half-Ironman World Championships in 2010, and Jim’s performances placed him in the top 1.5% of men in his age group nationally. They each spend between 10 and 20 hours each week swimming, cycling, and running to stay healthy and maintain their competitive form. Their children have already shown an interest in getting involved in the sport, as well.
Dr. Arnold also enjoys reading, traveling, attending sporting events, and spending a lot of time with his family. He is also a life member of the Mensa Society, and the Arnold family attends New Song Church in Valparaiso.
